So you want to find out about being a babysitter in the UK. Well I can tell you about babysitting in the UK.
In the UK a babysitter is someone who cares for children at the child's own home in the evening. Typically it is for a few hours - such as 7pm to 10pm. The number of hours of babysitting a family needs can vary.
That may not be what you thought a babysitter was... so here are some other childcare job titles given to people who work with children in the child's own home: Au-Pair, Mothers Help, Nanny
An Au-Pair is usually a student who is visiting the UK for a short while to practice English. In return for accomodation an Au-Pair provides help around the home.
A Mother's Help can be live-in or live-out and helps around the home. A Mother's Help does not have sole charge of children.
A Nanny can be live-in or live-out and is primarily providing childcare whilst parents are at work. Nannies have sole charge of children. You will need childcare qualifications to be a nanny.
To work in the UK you must be from one of the folowing countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Irish Republic, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom. Young people from Australia, Canada, Japan or New Zealand can work in the UK by applying for a visa under the Youth Mobility Scheme.
If you are not from one of the countried named above, you are not permitted to work in the UK. The Au-Pair visa no longer exists, so you must be an EU/EEA national or have the Youth Mobility Scheme visa.
